  • How does tanning work?

Tanning beds use UV or Ultraviolet light to tan your body. Since there are three types of UV light – UVA, UVB, and UVC – tanning beds are designed to use more levels of UVA with lower levels of UVB on your skin to promote the production of melanin, the pigment that makes you look tan even if you don’t spend time under actual sunlight. The most harmful form of UV light is the UVC which tanning beds filter out so that you only get the best forms of UV light.

  • What is the difference between UVA and UVB?

UVA penetrates the skin deeper, so it takes longer for the color to develop, but it lasts longer, whereas UVB color is more instant because it penetrates the most outer layers of skin but fades quicker. UVA produces a more brown color where as UVB produces a reddish color. UVB stimulates the melanin process and the UVA oxidizes the melanin.

  • What Do the Facial Lamps Do?

The facial plates offer more concentration on the face and are all UVA. Therefore the color on your face will last longer and the likelihood of burning the face is significantly decreased. The Solar System also has the option of turning them off for those clients who don’t want to tan their faces.

  • What do the lotions do?

All of the lotions have accelerators in them. Accelerators allow the skin to stay moist while tanning and provide acceleration to the tanning process for quicker and darker results. Some of the accelerators have bronzers (a light self-tanner), which will give the tan an instant brownish color. If a client wants to use a bronzer they shouldn’t shower for 2-3 hours after the tanning session because the bronzer will come off, however it’s an accelerator so the tanning process will still be accelerated. Some lotions contain dual or triple bronzers where the DHA provides results that last up to 5 days. Some accelerators have tingle in them, which has a hot actions that warms and reddens the skin by increasing blood flow to the top layers, which oxygenates the skin, making it more receptive to UV light. User may experience a tingling sensation while tanning that will feel warm and possibly itchy. Some accelerators have a cooling effect that causes a cooling sensation while tanning. Other accelerators have hemp seed, which provides the skin with nourishment and hydration for better and faster tanning results. None of the accelerators have an SPF in them because they are made to accelerate the tanning process an not prevent it.

  • What is the difference between beds and booths?

It is really your preference on whether you would like to lie down or stand up to tan. The majority of our beds do contain facial lamps while the booths don’t. Typically you can tan for a shorter amount of time in booths because the do not have acrylics over the bulbs which filter the UV rays. Booths are great for tanning underarms and other areas that are hard to tan in beds.

  • How Many Minutes Should I Tan For?

There is no standard answer for this question and if another salon provides you with an answer without seeing you, WATCH OUT. Everyone’s skin is different, and to properly answer this questions requires and evaluation by a smart tan certified staff member. (All the staff at The Solar System are Smart Tan Certified). During an evaluation several key questions are asked and answered, or researched on our client database to develop a complete understanding of your skin type and tanning history. Only after this process is complete can we tell you how many minutes you should tan for.

  • Do I need to wear eye protection?

Yes! This is our salon policy and is highly recommended in the tanning industry as essential tanning practice. All tanners should be wearing federally approved eyewear that block 99.9% of UVB light and 99% of UV light. Without eyewear severe damage to the eyes can result and simply closing the eyes is not enough! The eyelids are the thinnest skin on your body and they only block about 20% of UV light. The Solar System offers proper protection for both single visits and long term use.

  • I just can't get any darker. What can I do?

Your skin actually becomes thicker as your tanning progresses and makes it difficult for UV light to penetrate the upper layers of skin. This is commonly referred to as a tanning "Plateau". Moisturizer is extremely important at this point. Your skin cells are standing up as much as 45°and are actually reflecting the UV rays. Using a lot of moisturizing lotion will help these cells lay down and become more translucent, therefore more receptive to UV rays.

  • How do I keep my tan?

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Healthy skin tans faster, darker, and retains a tan longer. Drink plenty of water and make sure to keep your skin moisturized with a high quality lotion especially formulated-for-tanning. Your skin is constantly renewing itself. The dryer your skin is, the faster it wants to shed its top layers and bring new skin to the surface. If you loose the top layers, you loose your tan. Dry layers on the surface of your skin will block the UV rays from getting to the other layers to tan them. Even with moisturizing you will still need to maintain a tanning schedule of every 4 to 5 days, or at least once a week, to keep your tan, because your skin is reproducing new cells all the time.
